Licensed SOC

What is a modern SOC in 2026?

A modern SOC combines continuous endpoint, network, identity, cloud and email telemetry with behaviour-based detection, orchestrated response and 24/7 analysts, measuring value through business metrics rather than event volume.

What a modern SOC means in 2026

A modern security operations centre combines continuous telemetry from endpoints, network, identity, cloud and email with behaviour-based detection, orchestrated response and 24/7 analyst coverage. Unlike a classic SOC, it operates on correlated data rather than isolated alerts, automates the first containment actions and measures value through recovery time, protected assets and avoided incident cost.

The operating model rests on three overlapping capabilities: a unified SIEM/XDR layer that ingests relevant telemetry without making volume the enemy; a detection engine combining rules, UEBA and current threat intelligence; and an orchestration layer that executes response playbooks up to defined severity levels while reserving human attention for high-impact incidents.

Problems a modern SOC solves

Alert fatigue. A legacy SIEM can generate tens of thousands of alerts a day with a very high false-positive rate. Analysts become saturated and real incidents are dismissed by habit. A modern SOC reduces noise at ingestion with customer-tuned correlation and AI-assisted triage.

Blind windows outside business hours. Attacks frequently start overnight or at weekends. A 9-to-6 operation can leave an attacker moving laterally for hours. A modern SOC runs continuously and escalates according to an agreed response matrix.

Alerts without context. “Suspicious outbound connection from IP X” is not enough to make a decision. The modern SOC enriches each finding with asset, user and business-criticality context before escalation, reducing triage from minutes to seconds.

Manual response. Isolating a compromised endpoint in a classic operation may require a ticket, approval and a manual command. Pre-approved playbooks can isolate endpoints, block accounts, reset credentials and contain lateral movement for low and medium severities.

How a modern SOC works

High-volume telemetry ingestion

The platform receives events from EDR/XDR endpoints, NDR and firewalls, Active Directory, Entra ID and Okta, AWS, Azure and GCP, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and critical applications. Columnar object storage lowers the cost of retention compared with legacy SIEM models and removes the incentive to discard useful events.

Multi-layer detection

Correlation rules, UEBA and continuously updated threat intelligence operate over the same telemetry. The combination covers known threats and behavioural deviations while reducing the false-positive rate that otherwise consumes the analyst team.

AI-assisted triage

Alerts are enriched with asset, user and business context and converted into an actionable investigation summary. An L1 analyst can process substantially more alerts per shift without removing human accountability from the final decision.

Orchestrated response

Confirmed low and medium severity incidents can trigger automated playbooks: isolate the endpoint, block the compromised account, reset credentials or contain lateral movement. High severity cases escalate to a human analyst with the investigation already assembled.

Reporting and continuous improvement

Operational weekly reports, executive monthly reports and strategic quarterly reviews should include recommendations based on observed patterns, not generic templates.

Modern SOC compared with alternatives

AlternativeTelemetry coverage24/7 operationResponse automationTypical annual cost (500 endpoints)
Legacy SIEM plus internal teamLimited by GB costDifficult to sustainLow$700K–1.2M USD
Internal modern SOCBroadDepends on the teamMedium-high$900K–1.5M USD
Multi-tenant SOCaaSBroadContractualHigh$60K–180K USD
MDR focused on endpointEndpoint onlyContractualMedium$25K–90K USD

The economic equation has made multi-tenant SOCaaS attractive to mid-market organisations and MSSPs. An internal modern SOC is normally justified only at larger scale or where regulatory requirements demand dedicated operations.

Use cases

Fintech modernises its operation. A fintech with 240 employees and five analysts was processing 15,000 daily alerts with a four-hour MTTR. After adopting a modern SOC operating model, MTTR fell to 22 minutes and the organisation gained genuine 24/7 coverage.

Manufacturing detects ransomware early. In an IT/OT network, the modern SOC detected lateral movement before the attacker reached manufacturing servers. Automated containment isolated the originating endpoint with no operational interruption.

KPIs a modern SOC should meet

  • High-severity MTTD below 15 minutes.
  • High-severity MTTC below 30 minutes.
  • Fewer than 5% of escalated alerts should be false positives.
  • Declared coverage of the MITRE ATT&CK techniques relevant to the vertical.
  • At least 12 months of telemetry retention for forensic investigation.
  • Weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting cadence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a modern SOC and a SIEM?

A SIEM is a technical ingestion and correlation platform. A modern SOC is the full operating capability: platform, analysts, processes and playbooks. A SIEM without an operating model produces data; it does not provide protection by itself.

Can I modernise an existing SOC without replacing every tool?

Yes, provided the existing tools expose usable data through APIs or standard connectors. A typical modernisation replaces the correlation layer while retaining deployed EDR, firewalls and identity controls.

How long does SOC modernisation take?

Typically 60 to 120 days from contract signature to steady-state operation. The phases are source integration, detection tuning, threshold adjustment and operational transition.

Does a modern SOC replace the internal security team?

No. A licensed or managed SOC covers tactical 24/7 operations. Governance, architecture, risk, compliance and strategic coordination remain with the customer or partner.

Can a partner operate the SOC under its own brand?

Yes. The licensed model is designed for partners that want to operate monitoring, detection and response as part of their own customer proposition. Commercial ownership and the end-customer relationship remain with the partner.

Can I start with a pilot?

Yes. A 30–60 day pilot over a defined asset subset is the normal way to evaluate detection quality and operational fit before a full commitment.

Does it cover multi-cloud environments?

Yes. Mature platforms connect natively with AWS CloudTrail, Azure Activity and GCP Cloud Audit Logs, as well as endpoint, identity and email sources.

How to get started

Request an architecture conversation from the demo page. A 45-minute session with a senior presales engineer produces a specific assessment and a prioritised recommendation. Partners interested in operating a modern SOC for their customers can also review the MSSP programme.

Control criteria: document the validation of licensed SOC, record the evidence and confirm operational closure before moving to production.
