For MSSPs

How does an established MSSP scale without scaling its team?

An efficient MSSP scales through three levers: automation of repetitive tasks, standardized response playbooks and AI-assisted triage. With these capabilities, one analyst can move from operating 3–4 customers to 8–15 without compromising quality. Below 50 customers, the model can operate with 4–8 analysts in total.

What an MSSP looks like in 2026

An MSSP in 2026 operates managed security services with a specific focus: multi-tenant SOCaaS, industrialized vulnerability management, automated compliance, awareness and incident response under retainer. The difference from the 2019 MSSP is operational scale: today an MSSP with 15-25 active customers and 4-6 analysts is economically viable. Five years ago, that size did not add up.

Established MSSPs that are already operating face different challenges from MSPs that are building. Their concerns are scaling without growing the team linearly, increasing the average ticket, improving renewal rate, adding profitable adjacent services and competing with global MSSPs beginning to operate in LATAM.

The challenges of an established MSSP

The first challenge is efficient operations. An MSSP with 4-8 customers often has a narrow gross margin because team utilization is low. An MSSP with 20+ customers has a healthy margin but faces the complexity of coordinating operations across multiple verticals, time zones and risk profiles. Scaling well is not intuitive.

The second challenge is churn. MSSP customers do not renew out of inertia. They renew because the quarterly report shows delivered value. An MSSP with a weak report loses 15-25% of its base each year. One with a strong report retains more than 90%. The difference compounds quickly.

The third is ticket growth. A customer that arrives through SOCaaS can add vulnerability management, awareness, compliance and CISOaaS during the first 24 months. An MSSP that does not expand the account leaves money on the table. One that expands well doubles the ticket without adding a customer.

How an efficient MSSP operates multiple customers with a compact team

Automation of repetitive tasks

Onboarding, monthly reports, renewal coordination and detection-rule tuning are automated with scripts and the native capabilities of the SOCaaS platform. Each automated task frees between 4 and 20 analyst hours per month.

Standardized playbooks

Low- and medium-severity incidents are handled with playbooks that the platform or an L1 analyst executes in minutes. L2 and L3 attention is reserved for high severities. Standardization requires initial work but pays back in multiples over the months.

AI-assisted triage

An analyst can process between 200 and 400 alerts per shift with generative AI assisting triage, compared with 50-80 without it. Decision quality does not fall because the analyst still decides, only with the context already loaded.

An MSSP that combines the three levers reaches utilization ratios that make growth below 50 customers viable with 4-8 analysts. Above 50 customers, specialized roles emerge (threat hunter, detection engineer and service manager).

How to expand an existing customer account

The customer arrives through SOCaaS. That is the anchor service. Natural expansion windows appear over the following 6-24 months.

The second typical service is vulnerability management. It appears when the quarterly report shows that the customer has an incomplete inventory and slow patch cycles. Adding the service raises the ticket by $600-$2,000 USD per month with a gross margin of 55-70%.

The third is usually awareness and phishing simulation. It appears when the customer experiences an incident related to social engineering or when an auditor requests it. It adds $8-20 USD per user per month with a gross margin above 70%.

The fourth is automated compliance. It appears when the customer goes through a regulatory audit (ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS or local regulations). It adds $2,500-$8,000 USD per month with a high margin.

The fifth is CISOaaS. It appears when the customer recognizes that it needs strategic security leadership it cannot hire internally. It adds $2,500-$9,000 USD per month depending on the hours of the assigned senior CISO.

An MSSP that executes this expansion well can double or triple the average ticket across the installed base in 18-30 months without adding a customer.

How a local MSSP competes with global MSSPs

Global MSSPs are entering LATAM with strong brands and significant marketing budgets. Local MSSPs have concrete advantages that sustain their position when used well.

Language and time zone. Technical support in Spanish and local hours is rarely matched by a global MSSP without regional operations. Customers notice it during the first incident outside European or US business hours.

Local regulatory knowledge. Chilean Law 21.663, Colombia’s SFC Circular 007, Brazil’s LGPD and Peru’s Law 29733 are not handled well by a global MSSP without dedicated regional specialists.

Commercial and contractual response speed. A local MSSP signs contract changes in weeks. A large global MSSP may take months to approve exceptions from headquarters.

Face-to-face commercial relationships. LATAM mid-market customers value in-person meetings with the MSSP. Global MSSPs rarely offer them as frequently as the customer expects.

Cases of MSSP growth

MSSP in Costa Rica goes from 4 to 22 customers in 14 months. An MSSP with 2 initial analysts operating basic services. By combining a multi-tenant platform with onboarding automation and standardized playbooks, it scaled to 22 customers with 4 analysts in total. Monthly recurring revenue rose from $18K to $128K USD. Consolidated portfolio gross margin: 58%.

MSSP in Chile wins a public tender after Law 21.663. An MSP with 40 SMB customers in Chile that aspired to reach mid-market segments after the Framework Cybersecurity Law took effect. With SOCaaS, vulnerability management and awareness, it submitted a proposal for a tender from a medium-sized public organization. It won the contract for $310K USD per year, renewable. The case opened three additional public-sector opportunities in 4 months.

KPIs a mature MSSP should report

  • Active customers per analyst ratio.
  • Average annual ticket per customer and its evolution.
  • Annual renewal rate per customer.
  • Gross margin per customer and consolidated.
  • Number of active services per customer (account expansion).
  • Average portfolio MTTR.
  • False positives escalated to the customer.

Frequently asked questions

When does it make sense to invest in a dedicated threat hunter?

When the MSSP exceeds 25-35 customers and some operate in verticals with specific threats (finance, healthcare and energy). Before that size, the role is combined with a senior L3 analyst.

Should I develop my own platform or operate on the distributor’s platform?

Operating on the distributor’s platform is the sensible path for most MSSPs. Developing your own platform requires engineering investment that almost never competes with mature commercial platforms.

How do I protect margin at renewal?

With executive reports documenting delivered value (contained incidents, prevention savings and demonstrable regulatory compliance) and with an annual scope review that includes service expansion. Customers that see value renew without negotiating price.

What is the difference between an MSSP and managed XDR?

Managed XDR is a subset focused on extended detection across endpoint, network and identity. An MSSP includes XDR plus other operational capabilities (full SOCaaS, vulnerability management, compliance and awareness).

How do I approach highly regulated verticals where I have never operated?

With a distributor partnership for access to regulatory specialists and gradual hiring of vertical profiles. Healthcare, finance and critical energy cannot be targeted without specific preparation.

Can I offer white-label services under my brand?

Yes. White-label is standard for MSSPs that want to consolidate their own brand with the end customer. The distributor operates under the MSSP’s brand and does not interact directly with the customer.

How do I differentiate from other MSSPs offering the same thing?

With vertical specialization, customer-verifiable SLAs, high-quality executive reporting and incident-response speed. Price differentiation is rarely sustainable.

What investment is required to add CISOaaS to the portfolio?

A fractional senior CISO dedicated 40-60% of their time to the line. Typical cost is $12K-$22K USD per month depending on country and experience. It is justified when the MSSP has 8+ customers with the potential to buy CISOaaS.

Can I take out cyber insurance to back my SLAs?

Yes, and some MSSPs use it as a differentiator. The policy covers penalties for SLA breaches and sometimes civil liability for operational errors. Specialized insurers in LATAM are few but they exist.

Does this apply to MSSPs with customers only in LATAM or also to international customers?

It applies to both scenarios. The MSSP’s international expansion is coordinated with the distributor to ensure geographic coverage and regulatory compliance for the customer’s geography.
